WELCOME TO THE NEW FEARLESS!

Fearless Comedy Productions is now Fearless Theatrical Creations

In recent years, community theaters in the Twin Cities have faced a growing number of challenges. Since the pandemic, it has been harder to attract audiences to in-person shows, and equally challenging to recruit and retain artistic talent for productions. At the same time, growing inflation has meant that performance spaces and production expenses have gotten more expensive. Moreover, since Fearless’s founding, the local community has seen an explosion of theater companies and improv groups, which on the one hand means more artists making art, but on the other hand means greater competition for artists, audiences, and resources. All of this has taken its toll on Fearless, and our company has struggled to make ends meet.

This past year, Fearless’s leadership decided they had to make a change. The Twin Cities area has a wealth of talent, so we spoke to current and past Fearless members and conducted a survey of local theater and comedy artists to better understand their wants and needs. The artists expressed a need for more sketch comedy and original plays, a desire to perform in comedic and dramatic plays, and a strong interest in more opportunities for staged readings and workshops of new plays. The artists we heard from also suggested that Fearless should work on improving its quality, its professionalism, and its marketing, as well as creating a more inclusive and cohesive community.

With this feedback in mind, and given the current political climate and its impacts on the arts, our leadership has decided to refocus the company on its core mission: providing opportunities and support to help artists develop new and bold works for the stage. We want to help local artists develop daring ideas and make them successful, creating high-quality shows that entertain, engage, and challenge people’s thinking.

How will Fearless do this? First, we will focus on creating opportunities to present original, bold works to audiences. This includes our upcoming Fearless Five, an annual production of original short plays around a common theme, and Fearless Presents, a showcase of new works and our spring fundraising event. This fall, we are also producing The Leftovers Theater Festival, for bold new scripted works that were not accepted into Minnesota Fringe or Twin Cities Horror Fest.

Second, we will focus on providing support to develop new ideas into high-quality productions. We believe theater is at its best when it is collaborative – when different artists come together and contribute their ideas, perspective, and experience to improve an idea and help an artist realize their vision. We have already created the Brain Trust, an advisory group that reviews script submissions and provides constructive feedback to writers, and we have implemented a three-step script development process to provide helpful feedback to writers working on new scripts. This spring, we are also starting a new play reading series, In Development, where artists can workshop their plays with a director and actors before having them read for an audience. Starting in the fall, we will also be offering mentorships and trainings to help artists develop themselves and their talents in different aspects of theatre-making.

Of course, none of this will be possible if we do not improve how we operate. Our top priority will be delivering professional and rewarding experiences to both our artists and our audiences. We must organize, execute, and manage our productions and programs so our artists feel safe, valued, respected, and included. We must also create a best-in-class audience experience through the quality of our shows, our customer service, and the environment we create for our guests. We want everyone we work with, entertain, and interact with to have a positive, rewarding experience, no matter their background, experience, identity, or walk of life.

To reflect this change of direction and give us a fresh start, we’ve given our company a new name and look. “Fearless Theatrical Creations” reflects our dedication to bold new works for the stage, and a shift towards scripted works of all genres. Our new visual brand conveys our focus on quality and professionalism, with a pop of color and some creativity in the mix. We are serious about making good theater, but we do so with passion, joy, and good humor.

Making changes of this kind isn’t easy. Our leadership has drafted a new strategic plan to chart an ambitious course over the next three years. While we are being thoughtful and mindful in what we do, we are also living up to our name and taking some risks that we believe will add real value to artists and the local theatrical arts community. Our mission is to lift up the artists in our local community and help them create great theater, and we will stay focused on doing just that.

We invite you to learn more about the new Fearless by looking around our new website at fearlesstheatricalcreations.org. There you can read more about our mission and values, our productions, the opportunities we plan to offer artists, and ways to get involved and support our work. We also welcome any feedback or suggestions on how we can best serve you and our local theatrical arts community.

In times like these, we need daring theater more than ever. We hope you’ll join us as we move into this new chapter. Together, we can create a thriving theatrical arts community where artists can take risks, push the boundaries, and make bold theater that entertains, engages, and challenges audiences.

Jim Louis stepping down as Managing Director

Due to health reasons, Jim Louis has made the difficult decision to step down as Managing Director of Fearless Comedy Productions.

Jim has been with Fearless nearly since the beginning, serving as our Managing Director for many years. In this role, he has managed our finances, ensured our contracts were signed and our artists were paid, and handled all the necessary requirements for our status as a nonprofit organization. Not only has he served as Managing Director, but he has often helped us with managing our box office, he developed our health and safety policies and procedures, and he even directed for Fearless Five. His work behind the scenes was invaluable, his professional and historical knowledge has been a critical asset as we changed leadership in recent years, and his commitment to this organization has been nothing short of extraordinary.

While we will greatly miss him in this role, we are incredibly grateful that he has offered to be a resource as we continue our operations. His guidance will help ensure a smooth transition and we appreciate his support as we reshape Fearless into an organization more focused on helping local artists take risks and develop bold works for the stage.

Jim, thank you for your years of dedication to Fearless and everything you’ve done to keep Fearless running and thriving. We support you in prioritizing your well-being and we are so grateful for the time, energy, and passion you’ve given to this company.

Please join us in thanking Jim and sending him well wishes. And if you have any questions or concerns about this transition, please let us know.

Announcing our new Artistic Director!

After careful consideration of all applicants for the position, we’re excited to announce that Fearless Comedy Productions has chosen Eric B. Jacobson as our next Artistic Director.

You might know Eric from his performances in our last two Fearless Five productions. He also performed in shows at Minnesota Fringe over the last three years. In 2021 and 2022, he wrote and produced shows for Fringe, managing all aspects of the production, from the budget and marketing to casting and stage management. He’s tried his hand at stand-up comedy in New York City and taken classes in improv with ComedySportz here in the Twin Cities. A theater kid growing up, he studied acting with Studio ACT at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and studied playwriting with Michael Hollinger in Philadelphia and Josh Tobiessen in Minneapolis.

In addition to his theater experience, Eric has a professional background in organization development, strategic planning, communications, and nonprofit management. As a consultant, he has helped numerous nonprofit and for-profit businesses to develop compelling strategic plans and build support for their causes. More recently, he has worked in change management, working with leaders to mobilize diverse stakeholders and grow their businesses.

Born and raised in New York, Eric moved to the Twin Cities in 2019 from the San Francisco Bay Area. He’s also a West Coast Swing dancer, competitor, and teacher, and he founded a West Coast Swing dance community in San Francisco. Starting from scratch, he designed its programs, developed its leadership, and grew the local dance community, creating an internationally-recognized nonprofit organization that continues to thrive to this day.

Eric shared, “I’m thrilled and honored to accept this position leading Fearless into its next chapter. I enjoyed my experience in both Fearless productions, working with a group of kind, fun, and funny people dedicated to making great theater. I’m excited by the opportunity to help Fearless grow in this post-Covid landscape and explore new ways of creating engaging theatrical works that are truly ‘fearless.’ I can’t wait to dive in and work with this great group of people to elevate the company to new heights!”

The Board is confident that his extensive experience in organizational leadership, theater production, and nonprofit management will help Fearless continue to succeed. His strategic approach will help curate a performance season that resonates with our mission, and his ability to manage budgets, lead teams, and craft effective communications will be invaluable assets to our productions. His proven track record in producing shows, developing nonprofits, and building community – along with his commitment to inclusivity and innovation – align perfectly with our values and our mission to empower, educate, and explore the limits of comedy. We are particularly excited about his vision for the future of Fearless and how he wants to evolve our company in ways that energize and engage the local artistic community.

In the coming weeks, Eric will be getting up to speed on our operations and working with our staff to formulate a strategic plan for the company. He wants to hear from our community and will be reaching out soon to gather your feedback and better understand the opportunities to grow our company. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, you can send us a message.

Thank you for your continued support of Fearless – we would not be successful without your energy, enthusiasm, and engagement. We are truly grateful and we look forward to connecting with you again at one of our upcoming productions!
